Living Glass

Living Glass is a feature of Cat 'n Moose dot com by arrangement with the artists.
Mary has been working with art glass since 1982. She studied for two summers at The Penland School of Crafts in Spruce Pine North Carolina. Then apprenticed for 7 yrs with reknowned glass blower Nancy Freeman, whose work is in the Mondale Collection. Alan has been a glass blower since 1989 when he began apprenticing with his wife, Mary.
The type of glass is called art glass, and is unlike the commercial grades of glass most people are used to. These pieces are suitable for display or for serving foods at room temperature only.
All pieces are made at the artists' shop. The glass is melted, color is added and the molten glass then blown and shaped. After a cooling period it is grinded and if the piece requires, sandblasted. The processes involved are long and involve working with materials up to 2,000F. Every piece is individually created and is a one of a kind original. Mary and Al do all the work at the shop so quantities are limited. slide show
Because of the individuality of these pieces, they are each signed by the artist and dated with the month and year. All work is done by eye, which is why there is variation in the sizes of the work. This also makes each piece an individual unto itself. Two types of work are created, gallery pieces and craft pieces.
The renderings you see on this website have been prepared from photographs supplied by the artists and have been retouched and altered to render well on the web. Therefore they are not exact depictions of the real item. Colors and detail will vary, and overall the real thing will be far more beautiful and detailed than any picture you see on this website.
